I am writing about the need to reverse the youth e-cigarette epidemic that is sweeping across our country and ask for your help in driving down youth tobacco use.

Big Tobacco has placed a target on our kids’ backs with the marketing of flavored e-cigarettes, flavored cigars, and menthol cigarettes. Colorful packaging and sweet flavors such as cotton candy, chocolate, gummy bear, and fruit make flavored tobacco products hard to distinguish from candy and other products kids like.

Although tobacco companies claim to be responding to adult tobacco users’ demand for variety, flavored tobacco products play a key role in enticing kids to a lifetime of addiction. More than 80% of kids who have used tobacco report that they began with a flavored product, and 97% of kids who vape use flavored products. This growing market for flavored tobacco products is undermining the nation’s progress in reducing youth tobacco use.

Prohibiting flavored tobacco products is one of the most important steps we can take to get this problem under control.

The federal government’s new e-cigarette policy will not stop the youth e-cigarette epidemic that is addicting a generation of our kids. It is riddled with loopholes that allow products such as disposable e-cigarettes, over 15,000 flavored e-liquids, refillable devices, and menthol-flavored pods to remain available, providing a roadmap for e-cigarette makers to continue addicting kids with flavored products. The evidence is clear: If any flavored products are left on the market, kids will simply switch to them.

I urge you to take a stand against all flavored tobacco products and do your part to help create the first tobacco-free generation.
